Lagrangian reduction and wave mean flow interaction

چکیده

How does one derive models of dynamical feedback effects in multiscale, multiphysics systems such as wave mean flow interaction (WMFI)? We shall address this question for hybrid systems, defined whose motion can be expressed the composition two or more Lie-group actions. Hybrid abound fluid dynamics. Examples include: dynamics complex fluids liquid crystals; wind-driven waves propagating with currents moving on sea surface; turbulence modelling and plasmas; classical-quantum hydrodynamic molecular chemistry. From among these examples, motivating here is: do produce ocean surface currents? The paper first summarises geometric mechanics approach deriving motions ideal It then illustrates WMFI examples 3D WKB 2D amplitudes governed by nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation frame an incompressible inhomogeneous Euler flow. results tell us that not create waves, although it transport waves. However, opposite direction is possible, since NLS discussed fact circulatory

An Introduction to the Generalized Lagrangian-mean Description of Wave, Mean-flow Interaction'

The generalized Lagrangian-mean description is motivated a n d illustrated by means of some simple examples of interactions between waves and mean flows, confining attention for the most part to waves of infinitesimal amplitude. The direct manner in which the theoretical description leads to the wave-action concept and related results, and also to the various 'noninteraction' theorems, more acc...

Potential Vorticity Thickness Fluxes and Wave–Mean Flow Interaction

The use of eddy flux of thickness between density surfaces has become a familiar starting point in oceanographic studies of adiabatic eddy effects on the mean density distribution. In this study, a dynamical analogy with the density thickness flux approach is explored to reexamine the theory of nonzonal wave–mean flow interaction in two-dimensional horizontal flows. By analogy with the density ...

Mean Curvature Flow and Lagrangian Embeddings

In this note we provide examples of compact embedded lagrangians in Cn for any n ≥ 2 that under mean curvature flow develop singularities in finite time. When n is odd the lagrangians can be taken to be orientable. By gluing these lagrangians onto a special lagrangian embedding L we provide examples of compact embedded lagrangians in a Calabi-Yau manifold that under mean curvature flow develop ...

Wave–mean interaction theory

This is an informal account of the fluid-dynamical theory describing nonlinear interactions between small-amplitude waves and mean flows. This kind of theory receives little attention in mainstream fluid dynamics, but it has been developed greatly in atmosphere and ocean fluid dynamics. This is because of the pressing need in numerical atmosphere–ocean models to approximate the effects of unres...

Translating Solutions to Lagrangian Mean Curvature Flow

We prove some non-existence theorems for translating solutions to Lagrangian mean curvature flow. More precisely, we show that translating solutions with an L bound on the mean curvature are planes and that almost-calibrated translating solutions which are static are also planes. Recent work of D. Joyce, Y.-I. Lee, and M.-P. Tsui, shows that these conditions are optimal.
